Soil health is critical to human health and plant health. Farmers that use no-till practices keep the roots of the grass in the earth and sequestering carbon year-round. Microorganisms thrive in a no-till environment and are better able to help the grass take carbon from the atmosphere. When cows graze on pasture they stimulate the plant roots to grow, distribute manure as fertilizer and help build healthy soil ecology.
Merissa, co-founder of Tree Island Yogurt, comes from a family of Ukrainian farmers in Saskatchewan:
“I spent time in the garden and kitchen with my grandma and great grandma each summer. They told me about the 70s when chemicals were used frequently to deal with grasshoppers and wheat rust. They farmed the same land for over 100 years and said the soil was changing overtime. After hearing my family’s stories and frequent visits to the health food store with my grandma, I knew I wanted to learn more. I worked on an organic farm in Sweden and spent a few years as a research assistant for cancer care, which made me more aware of the risks associated with exposure to environmental toxins.
